Murphy Oil Corporation has been a steady producer of petroleum
products for half a century. Throughout that time, it has withstood the wildest
swings in the market, because it has earned the trust of its customers as a
stable and well managed company. It is this reputation that has allowed Murphy
Oil to form a successful partnership with Wal-Mart to build and operate hundreds
of stations in Wal-Mart stores parking areas throughout the Southeast and
Upper Midwest regions of the United States.
Murphy Oil's northern
refinery, located in Superior, Wisconsin, has direct access to the Magellan
Pipeline. This 35,000 barrel per-day facility produces a full slate of
conventional gasoline and distillate products which Murphy actively markets in
the North Central United States. Murphy Oil USA, Inc. owns product terminals at
Superior, WI and Duluth, MN and also throughputs products at several Magellan
Pipeline terminals in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.
In addition, Murphy Oil USA, Inc. has exchange agreements to lift products at
several terminals in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Murphy's
southeastern refinery is located at Meraux, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans,
LA. From this refinery, Murphy has direct access to the Colonial and Plantation
Pipelines (Collins, MS origin), as well as a river dock facility on the lower
Mississippi River, which can handle both shallow and deep draft vessels. The
125,000 barrel per-day Meraux refinery produces a full slate of conventional
gasoline and distillate products, as well as ultra low sulfur gasoline and
diesel, which Murphy actively markets in the Southeastern United States. Murphy
Oil USA, Inc. owns several terminals throughout the Southeastern United States
and also markets product in terminals located along the Colonial and Plantation
Pipelines. In addition, Murphy Oil USA, Inc. has exchange agreements to lift
products at various southeastern U.S. terminals owned by other
companies.
Murphy’s Meraux refinery has the only three stage Residual Oil
Supercritical Extraction (ROSE) unit operating in the U.S. This unit
fractionates vacuum tower bottoms into asphaltene, resin, and a lighter product,
deasphalted oil.
Asphaltene is an extremely hard asphalt. The
softening point is 300 degrees F with a 0 penetration, and is easily ground to a
powder. Asphaltene can be shipped as a solid pellet for easy handling, or as a
liquid. Applications include asphalt blending component for improving the high
temperature characteristics of Super Pave asphalt, roofing, coatings, sand mold
additive for metal casting, clay pigeons, inks and a additive in formulating
drilling muds. Additionally, asphaltene can be used as a fuel either as a liquid
or a solid. It has a heat value of 17,000 Btu per pound which is much higher
than coal or petroleum coke.
Resin is unique to Murphy’s ROSE
process. The softening point is 110 degrees F and the penetration is 100. The
most important characteristics of resin is its binding ability. Some of the
applications are as a blending component for asphalt cement, roofing asphalt,
and coating. Resin is sold only as a liquid.
Murphy has the capability to
blend asphaltene and resin at various ratios, and thereby producing a product to
meet the customers’ requirements. These liquids can be shipped by rail or truck.
