Social Responsibility

Operating Responsibly is Personal

Protecting and preserving the environment is a long-standing and deep-rooted principle for everyone at Murphy Oil Corporation. At all levels of the Company, Murphy employees work capably and conscientiously to complete the complex tasks required to safely locate, produce, refine and market the petroleum products on which our world depends.

The Company’s founder, Charles Murphy, was a forerunner in the environmental awareness movement of the 1960s, and was instrumental in establishing a productive dialog among a number of historically opposed consortiums, including oil industry executives, environmental conservation leaders, and government officials. His tireless efforts helped lead to new standards and practices for the oil and gas industry. In recognition of his efforts, Mr. Murphy received Chevron’s Conservation award in 1999.

“I have always known that the individuals in this company understood their responsibilities and met them. It is not until you experience an event like Katrina, however, that displaced virtually all of our Meraux employees . . . that you see firsthand the commitment and honor of our people. I have never been more proud to be part of Murphy Oil Corporation.”

– Claiborne Deming President and Chief Executive Officer

Murphy is also timely in its environmental remediation activities. When Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters caused an oil spill at the Meraux refinery in 2005, Murphy managers and employees didn’t hesitate. Under extreme conditions, when many Murphy employees had lost their homes and travel was hazardous, they immediately launched an aggressive clean-up effort. Due to the Company’s swift and decisive action, all major issues of clean-up and remediation were addressed straight away—a testament to Murphy’s commitment to the environment and the community.
